Story
Flattened geometric shapes mingle with curving, organic forms across a muted ground, built from blocks of red, yellow, blue, and black with touches of white. The arrangement reads as a still life pared down to its essential volumes and outlines rather than realistic objects. This oil composition was made in 1936 by Arshile Gorky (1904–1948), an Armenian-American painter associated with abstract expressionism and modern art.
Where it works
A still life suited to living rooms and media rooms, and to restaurants, in a vertical format.
