Nature Symbolized #3: Steeple and Trees

Story

A church steeple rises among rounded, simplified trees, rendered as flattened geometric shapes in green, cream, dark red, and black. The forms press close together, turning the rural scene into a pattern of color rather than a literal view. Arthur Dove made this piece in pastel on board mounted on wood panel in 1911. Dove, an American painter and draftsperson, worked toward abstraction drawn from natural forms. The piece comes from the Daniel J. Terra Collection.
