Arthur Dove was a pioneering American modernist often regarded as the first American abstract painter. Born in Canandaigua, New York, Dove studied at Cornell University before beginning his career as a commercial illustrator in New York. After traveling to Paris in 1907, he encountered European avant-garde movements including Fauvism and early abstraction, influences that shaped his highly original artistic vision. Returning to the United States, he became closely associated with photographer and art dealer Alfred Stieglitz, who championed his work throughout his career.
Dove developed a unique style he described as “extraction,” simplifying natural forms into rhythmic abstractions inspired by landscapes, weather, water, and sound. Working across painting, collage, pastel, and mixed media, he experimented constantly with materials and technique. Though often struggling financially and physically, Dove remained devoted to innovation and personal expression. His lyrical abstractions and spiritual connection to nature profoundly influenced later American modernists, including Georgia O'Keeffe, and secured his place as a foundational figure in American abstract art.
