Story

Rings of blue, green, purple, and gray radiate outward around a glowing yellow core, its edge traced in dark blue, all set against a pale band of white. The composition suggests a sun pulsing with layered color, as though light itself were caught mid-expansion. This piece, titled Sunrise III, was made in 1936 using wax emulsion and oil on canvas, with sections coated in gesso, and it is held at the Yale University Art Gallery. The artist, Arthur Dove (1880–1946), was an American painter and draftsperson whose notable work Black and White reflects his approach to abstraction. One detail worth noticing is how the concentric rings seem to vibrate against each other, creating a sense of pulsing energy radiating from the yellow center outward through each colored band.
