Story

Curved, overlapping shapes drift across the surface in cream, tan, brown, green, and blue, their rounded edges suggesting billowing sails caught mid-motion. The forms layer and fold into one another, creating a rhythmic sense of wind and water without depicting any literal scene. Made with pastel on composition board mounted on wood panel in 1911, the piece reflects Arthur Dove's American approach to abstraction. It comes from the Daniel J. Terra Collection.

Where it works

Suited to dens and media rooms, and to hotel guest rooms, in a horizontal format.
