Story
A pale yellow ground anchors a cluster of geometric forms in red, green, orange, and yellow, their edges meeting and overlapping in a loose arrangement that suggests shapes drawn from a landscape rather than copied directly from one. The composition sits quietly on the page, built from flat planes rather than deep perspective, giving the impression of a scene reduced to its essential blocks of color. This piece, titled Untitled (Centerport), was made in 1941 using watercolor, gouache, ink and pencil on paper mounted on paperboard, and it is held at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Arthur Dove (1880–1946), an American painter and draftsperson, also created the work Reflections. Worth noticing is how the orange and green shapes press against one another near the center, creating a sense of quiet tension against the soft yellow backdrop.
