Story
Rounded shapes in green and tan spread across a pale cream background, each one traced in black outline. The forms suggest the rise and fall of hills or fields seen from a distance, abstracted into simple curved masses rather than literal scenery. This untitled landscape was made in 1938 using ink and watercolor on paper mounted on paperboard, and it is held at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The artist, Arthur Dove (1880–1946), was an American painter and draftsperson whose notable works include Black and White. One detail worth noticing is how the black outlines separate the green and tan shapes cleanly, keeping each organic form distinct even as they overlap and press against one another to build the sense of a continuous terrain.
Where it works
