Story
Bold black strokes sweep across a pale, cream-toned sheet, their angular arrangement hinting at something like a beam or girder, as if an industrial or architectural structure had been reduced to raw gesture. The piece is untitled, made in 1955 using brush and black ink on wove paper, and it is held at the National Gallery of Art, where it entered the collection as a gift from Edward R. Broida. Franz Kline, who lived from 1910 to 1962 and worked as an American painter, was associated with abstract expressionism and action painting. One detail worth noticing is how the brushwork keeps its sweeping, physical energy even against the quiet, open background, giving the forms a sense of structural weight despite their abstraction.
Where it works
Warm-toned artwork suited to dens and living rooms, and to hotel lobbies, in a horizontal format.
