Story
A striped vase holds a dense cluster of blooms, including red carnations, orange and white daisies, a dark tulip, and small blue flowers, all set against a backdrop that shifts between green and red. The arrangement is tightly packed, with each flower distinct in color and shape against the bold ground. This piece, titled Bouquet of Flowers with China Asters and Tokyos, was painted in 1910 using oil, and it is held at the Barnes Foundation. Henri Rousseau (1844–1910), a French artist, worked in naïve art and is known for his notable work The Dream. One detail worth noticing is how the red portion of the background seems to glow behind the vase, intensifying the contrast with the surrounding green.
