Story
A fortified castle rises above rocky cliffs, watching over a restless sea where a lone boat battles the swell beneath a sky thick with clouds in muted green and blue tones. The scene is rendered in watercolor and gum arabic over graphite underdrawing, completed in 1798. The artist, Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851), worked within English painting and Romanticism, known also for Calais Pier.
