J. M. W. Turner, born Joseph Mallord William Turner, was one of Britain’s greatest painters and a leading figure of the Romantic movement. Renowned for his luminous colour, atmospheric landscapes, and dramatic marine scenes, Turner transformed landscape painting into a powerful and emotionally charged art form. Born in London to a modest family, he showed exceptional talent from a young age and entered the Royal Academy of Arts at just fourteen.
Throughout his career, Turner travelled extensively across Britain and Europe, filling sketchbooks with studies that later inspired his celebrated paintings and watercolours. His work evolved from detailed topographical scenes to increasingly expressive and almost abstract compositions, making him a significant precursor to Impressionism and modern abstract art. Admired by critic John Ruskin, Turner produced more than 550 oil paintings and thousands of works on paper. Intensely private and eccentric, he remained devoted to his art throughout his life. Today, his visionary treatment of light, weather, and atmosphere continues to influence artists around the world.
