Venice: An Imaginary View of the Arsenale

Story

A Venetian waterway opens before the eye, lined with terracotta buildings and crossed by a bridge, while boats drift across water touched by warm ochres and cool blues. The scene imagines the Arsenale, rendered with loose, glowing color rather than sharp detail. Turner made this in watercolour and bodycolour on paper in 1840. The British artist, who lived 1775–1851, worked within English painting and Romanticism, bringing atmosphere and light to this imagined view.
