Story

Waves churn under a heavy sky, with scattered wreckage from a broken ship tossed amid the swell. The scene is rendered in subdued beige, grey, and brown tones, conveying the violence of the storm and the vulnerability of the vessel caught within it. This oil painting on canvas was created in 1840 by Joseph Mallord William Turner, a British artist associated with Romanticism and English painting whose notable work includes Calais Pier.
