Story
A quiet bedroom unfolds in loose washes, its walls and furniture suggested through soft architectural shapes rather than sharp outlines. Blue, yellow, cream, and terracotta hues blend softly across the room, giving the interior a hazy, light-filled calm. The piece was made in 1840 using watercolour and bodycolour on paper. Joseph Mallord William Turner, a British artist born in 1775 and died in 1851, worked within English painting and Romanticism, traditions reflected in this intimate study of the Palazzo Giustinian bedroom in Venice.
Where it works
A pastel interior scene suited to bedrooms and living rooms, and to hotel guest rooms, in a horizontal format.
