Story
A spread of blue wildflowers covers open ground beneath twisted mesquite trees that line a stretch of water, all set under a soft, pale sky. The composition carries a calm, open feeling, with the low light suggesting an early season rather than full summer warmth. The piece was painted in 1919 in oil on wood by Julian Onderdonk, and it is held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, having come to the collection as a gift. Onderdonk, who lived from 1882 to 1922, worked within Impressionism and is also known for his piece Untitled (Field of Bluebonnets). One detail worth noticing is how the gnarled, twisting shapes of the mesquite branches stand out against the softer, flatter expanse of blue blossoms spreading across the field below them.
