Julian Onderdonk was a leading American Impressionist painter and is often celebrated as the “father of Texas painting.” Born in San Antonio, Texas, he was the son of artist Robert Jenkins Onderdonk and grew up immersed in the artistic culture of South Texas. Early encouragement from painter Verner Moore White inspired his passion for landscape painting.
At nineteen, Onderdonk traveled to New York to study under renowned Impressionist William Merritt Chase at the Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art. After several years in New York, he returned to San Antonio in 1909, where he created his most celebrated works. He became especially known for his luminous bluebonnet landscapes, capturing the light, atmosphere, and expansive beauty of the Texas countryside with vibrant color and delicate brushwork.
Onderdonk’s paintings remain iconic representations of Texas art and are held in major collections, including the Dallas Museum of Art and the San Antonio Museum of Art.
