Story

A sweeping expanse of blue wildflowers stretches across the ground, reaching toward a line of distant trees and water beneath a soft, hazy sky. The blooms are Texas bluebonnets, filling the open field in a landscape composition. This is an oil painting completed in 1918, held today at the Dallas Museum of Art, where it entered the collection through the bequest of Margaret M. Ferris. The artist, Julian Onderdonk (1882–1922), was an American painter associated with Impressionism. Worth noticing is how the hazy light softens the horizon, letting the dense carpet of blue flowers dominate the eye while the trees and water recede quietly into the pale distance.
