Story

A youthful angel appears in profile, hair falling in soft curls, set against a shadowed backdrop rendered in warm browns and gold tones. The figure comes from a detail of The Virgin of the Rocks, painted in oil on panel in 1508. It belongs to the National Gallery collection. The piece is the work of Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519), an Italian artist associated with the High Renaissance and the broader Renaissance movement.
