The Madonna Litta

Story

A mother dressed in deep red with a blue mantle cradles her feeding baby, the pair set before a shadowed interior punctuated by two arched openings that reveal faint views of hills beyond. Rendered in tempera on canvas after being moved from its original wooden support, the piece dates to 1490. It comes from Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519), an Italian figure central to the High Renaissance.
