Story
Floating shapes drift across a plain backdrop, blending angular and rounded forms in blue, black, gray, red, and yellow, their edges overlapping in loose, uneven patterns. The piece was made in 1944 using watercolor, pen and black ink, and brush and black ink over graphite on wove paper. It belongs to abstract expressionism, a movement associated with Mark Rothko (1903–1970), an American artist working as painter and draftsperson.
