Story
A dark gray-black rectangle sits above two lighter red sections, all set against a deep red background. The composition favors broad fields of color over defined edges, letting the hues press against one another. Painted in oil in 1957, the piece belongs to Mark Rothko's practice within abstract expressionism, an American movement centered on color and form rather than representation.
Where it works
A warm-toned color-field abstract suited to dens and media rooms, and to hotel guest rooms, in a vertical format.
