Green and Maroon

Story

A canvas built from three stacked bands of color: a deep green zone at the top, a slim blue line crossing the middle, and a rust-red field below. The surface holds nothing but these horizontal shapes, their edges soft and uneven. Painted in oil in 1953, the piece belongs to abstract expressionism, the manner in which Mark Rothko (1903–1970) worked. It entered The Phillips Collection in 1957.

Where it works

A cool-toned color-field abstract suited to dens and media rooms, and to hotel guest rooms, in a vertical format.
