Green and Tangerine on Red

Story

Horizontal bands of dark teal, red, and tan stretch across a neutral ground, stacked rectangles hovering without hard edges. The composition is built in oil, completed in 1956 by Mark Rothko (1903–1970), an American artist associated with abstract expressionism. The painting entered The Phillips Collection in 1960. Its soft-bordered forms create a quiet, glowing field, the colors seeming to breathe against the pale backdrop, suspended in careful balance.

Where it works

A warm-toned color-field abstract suited to dens and media rooms, and to hotel guest rooms, in a vertical format.
