Story

Three wide bands of color stack atop one another, their boundaries soft and hazy rather than sharply drawn. A dark green field sits above a glowing red expanse, while a pale lavender blue strip frames the composition like a quiet border. Painted in oil in 1955, the work belongs to Mark Rothko's abstract expressionism, in which color itself carries the emotional weight. It came to the museum as a gift.

Where it works

A cool-toned color-field abstract suited to media rooms and dens, and to hotel guest rooms, in a vertical format.
