Story
Stacked bands stretch across the canvas, their edges soft and uneven, moving through dark gray, tan, purple, and blue as the eye travels downward. The muted tones seem to hover rather than sit flat, giving the surface a quiet depth. Painted in oil on unprimed canvas in 1949, the piece belongs to Mark Rothko's work within abstract expressionism. It entered the Chrysler Museum of Art as part of a bequest.
Where it works
A cool-toned color-field abstract suited to living rooms and dens, and to hotel guest rooms, in a vertical format.
