Story
Horizontal bands stretch across the canvas, their gray, orange, and dark brown tones resting against a deeper brown field, each shape softened at its edges so the colors seem to breathe into one another. Painted in oil in 1963, the composition favors mood over form. Mark Rothko (1903–1970), an American painter associated with abstract expressionism, made this piece, now held at the Detroit Institute of Arts through a purchase fund established by the Founders Society.
Where it works
A warm-toned color-field abstract suited to living rooms and hallways, and to restaurants, in a vertical format.
