Story

Two rust-orange rectangles stand side by side, divided by a darker band, all set against a deep brown ground. The forms have soft, hazy edges that seem to hover rather than sit flatly on the surface. The piece is untitled, made by Mark Rothko (1903–1970), an American artist. Rothko worked within abstract expressionism, a movement that favored expressive color and form over recognizable subject matter.

Where it works

A warm-toned color-field abstract suited to dens and living rooms, and to boardrooms, in a vertical format.
