Story

Two dark red rectangles hover one above the other, divided by a horizontal band of orange, the whole composition set against a glowing orange ground. The forms seem to float with soft, blurred edges rather than hard lines. This piece was made with acrylic and ink on wove paper in 1969. The artist, Mark Rothko (1903–1970), was an American painter associated with abstract expressionism, also known for the notable work No. 1.

Where it works
