Story
Two dark rectangular shapes float on a vivid blue ground, divided by a horizontal line running between them. The forms sit close together, their edges soft and uneven, giving the composition a quiet, hovering weight. Made with acrylic and ink on paper in 1969, the piece came to the National Gallery of Art as a gift from the Mark Rothko Foundation, Inc. Mark Rothko (1903–1970), an American artist, worked within abstract expressionism, exploring color and form through fields of layered pigment.
