Story
A broad rectangle splits into two zones, a deep brown band resting above a quieter gray one, with brushwork left visible across both surfaces, giving the division a soft, uneven edge rather than a hard line. The piece is rendered in acrylic on paper, completed in 1969. Mark Rothko, an American painter (1903–1970), worked within abstract expressionism.
Where it works
