Story
A broad field splits into two horizontal zones, a somber brown band resting above a pale gray expanse, each half holding its own weight without any defined edge or figure. The composition is rendered in acrylic on paper, dated 1969. It belongs to Mark Rothko (1903–1970), an American painter associated with abstract expressionism, whose work is held at the National Gallery of Art.
