Story
Shapes drift across a pale beige field, blending geometric forms with softer organic curves. Blue, red, yellow, and brown tones overlap and layer, some areas transparent, others opaque, creating a sense of depth without any fixed horizon. Painted in 1944 using transparent and opaque watercolor, the piece was made by Mark Rothko (1903–1970), an American artist associated with abstract expressionism. It came to its collection as a gift from the Mark Rothko Foundation.
