Story
A broad field of deep red hovers above a smaller band of brown, both resting against a pale beige ground, the shapes softly bounded and glowing against one another. The composition was made as oil on paper mounted on canvas in 1967. Mark Rothko (1903–1970), an American painter associated with abstract expressionism, created this work, which entered the Currier Museum of Art as a gift from Dr. Albert W. Grokoest.
Where it works
A warm-toned color-field abstract suited to living rooms and dens, and to hotel guest rooms, in a vertical format.
