Story
Layers of pink, orange, and earthy tones spread across a cream surface, built from loose gestural lines and overlapping brushwork that seem to float without fixed edges. The piece, titled Untitled (verso), was made in 1944 using transparent and opaque watercolor. Mark Rothko (1903–1970), an American artist associated with abstract expressionism, created it before his later signature style emerged. The work entered Yale University Art Gallery as a gift from the Mark Rothko Foundation, Inc.
