Broad green leaves surround clusters of red-brown blooms set against a plain cream background, rendered with careful attention to the plant's natural form. The piece is identified as Canna gigantea, though it depicts the species Canna tuerckheimii. It was made as a coloured lithograph in 1811. The artist, Pierre Joseph Redouté (1759–1840), worked as a botanical illustrator with ties to France.
