Pierre Joseph Redouté

Pierre-Joseph Redouté was a celebrated botanical artist and painter renowned for his exquisite watercolor illustrations of roses, lilies, and exotic flowers. Born in present-day Belgium, he came from a family of artists and moved to Paris as a teenager, where his talent soon attracted the attention of leading botanists and members of the French court. Redouté became the official floral painter to Queen Marie Antoinette and later served Empress Joséphine de Beauharnais at the Château de Malmaison.

Known as the “Raphael of flowers,” Redouté combined scientific precision with remarkable artistic elegance. Working directly from live plants, he produced more than 2,100 published botanical plates depicting over 1,800 species from around the world. His illustrations, admired for their luminous detail and natural beauty, remain among the finest examples of botanical art and continue to influence artists and botanists today.
