A Bouquet of Flowers with Insects

Story

A gathering of purple flowers rises on slender stems, surrounded by green leaves, with an orange butterfly resting nearby against a plain cream background. The piece is rendered in watercolor with gold on vellum, a technique that gives the petals and wings a delicate glow. Pierre Joseph Redouté, who lived from 1759 to 1840, worked as a botanical illustrator and collector, bringing close observation of plants and insects into this careful composition.

Where it works

A cool-toned floral still life suited to libraries and bedrooms, and to hotel guest rooms, in a vertical format.
