Story

A single tulip rises on a slender green stem flanked by two leaves, its petals streaked with pink and yellow against a plain cream backdrop. The bloom's striped pattern catches the eye, rendered with careful attention to color and form. This piece was made using stipple engraving and watercolor in 1827. Pierre Joseph Redouté, who lived from 1759 to 1840, worked as a botanical illustrator with citizenship tied to Belgian, France, and Southern Netherlands.
