Story
A stretch of coastline unfolds with people gathered on a sandy shore, the water a cool blue beneath hills lined with trees and a sky heavy with cloud. The scene captures a casual day spent near the sea at Coogee, where small groups move along the beach under muted light. This oil painting was made in 1888 by Tom Roberts and is held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, having entered the collection through a purchase. Roberts was an Australian painter associated with the Heidelberg School, and his reputation also rests on works such as A break away!. One detail worth noticing is how the overcast sky softens the contrast between sand, sea, and distant hills, giving the whole view a quiet, even tone rather than sharp brightness.
