Story

A gathering of pink and white roses rests in a vase upon a pale tabletop, set off by a deep brown backdrop that pushes the blooms forward into soft light. Tom Roberts painted this arrangement in oil on canvas on hardboard in 1911. Roberts, who lived from 1856 to 1931, worked as an Australian painter associated with the Heidelberg School. The piece came to the Art Gallery of New South Wales as a gift.

Where it works

A warm-toned still life suited to dens and bedrooms, and to hotel guest rooms, in a horizontal format.
