Story
Rectangular blocks of brown, green, red, black, and cream overlap and stagger across the surface, forming a fragmented pattern that suggests tilted structures and shifting planes. The composition builds its sense of space through these layered colored blocks, resembling broken architecture. It is painted in oil on canvas, bordered with a red watercolor edge and laid down on cardboard mat, dated 1922. Paul Klee (1879–1940), a German-Swiss artist associated with the Bauhaus and Expressionism, made this piece now held at the Yale University Art Gallery.
Where it works
Muted artwork suited to dens and media rooms, and to hotel guest rooms, in a horizontal format.
